FLEETWOOD TRAWLERS (either former, current or future) INVOLVED IN OPERATION NEPTUNE - NORMANDY LANDINGS 23 May - 30 June 1940

Anti-submarine trawlers

Anti-submarine (A/S) trawlers were selected from the most modern and/or speedy (11 knots or more) requisitioned trawlers. Often ballasted to reduce trim by the stern, these trawlers were fitted with ASDIC outfits for the detection of submarines and carried depth charges in racks for their subsequent persecution. Armament usually consisted of a forecastle mounted 4" gun with 2x1- 20mm AA, 2x1- 0.5" AA and 2 x 1 MG's. Employed as anti-submarine screens for convoys, they played an important role throughout the build-up and execution of Operation NEPTUNE.
