A picture taken somewhere off Iceland. When the wind, air and sea temperatures were just right, ice could build up at an alarming rate on a trawler's upperworks. The crew then had to turn to with anything that they could get hold of and chip away the ice. Failure to do so has resulted in the loss of more than one vessel as the ice made them top heavy and they capsized. Here deckies ar seen working on the exposed fordeck to clear the accumulation of ice.

2 more images from the Cod Wars. The Icelandic gunboat is risking getting a stem packed with ice in a very tender spot from the trawler steaming at high speed.

A few more pictures from D. Ironside, taken aboard trawlers around 1938. The first one shows one of the regular tasks on the coal fired steam boats, getting shut of the boiler ashes. These were hauled out of the engine room and tipped over the side. D.Ironside's father is seen with a cigarette in his mouth.
