Hi,
email: wjohnmaunder@tiscali.co.uk

I am 76 years old and my granddad: Willam Maunder captained vessels "ALBATROSS & STORM COCK" out of the Barbican (Sutton Harbour) Plymouth and I was very interested to see the information you have on the two steam trawlers. I remember him saying about the first world war when he was involved in the Western Approaches regarding the sinking/capture of a german submarine. The submarine captain on the trawler was very sick as it rolled for more than his submarine. It would be interesting if you can conirm this as it was so long ago when he told me this. He died in 1956. I also have his Captains Certifcates and a picture of him and his crew. Also Again I remember that they went to see for 14 days with 100 ton of coal and 100 ton ice and coming back with 100 ton of fish in the coal bunkers I assume.

He also captained "Verity" again a steam trawler which I have no information on to date. I remember him telling me that she came from the east coast but no more than that. Any information on this trawler would be interesting.

Please remember I am 76 years old and I am open to correction but I hope this will be of interest to you.

The boat's name most probably comes from the 'Three Kings' which are three sea stacks of red sandstone which rise up from the sand on Cullen beach between Cullen and Portknockie.

Hi Jim,

I am researching my family tree and there is a trawler S.T. Sweeper GY853 on this site that I would like a copy of the image. You have the image listed as courtesy of the JJ Collection. Is there any chance you can give me their details so that I can contact them?

Kind regards,

Bob

[...] The Hull trawler Skegness was built for the Admiralty in 1917 and, as James Peake, undertook anti-submarine duties. The vessel was re-named Aragonite in 1924 and Skegness in May 1934 when she was purchased by Trident Fishing Company of Hull. Just over a year later, returning full of fish from the Faroe grounds, the vessel ran onto rocks beneath Speeton/Bempton cliffs at night and in fog. The weather was quite calm and Skipper Richard WRIGHT, age 28, didn’t send out an immediate call for help, believing he could refloat on the high tide. He declined a tow from ST Nordale SH89.
My Grandfather was a member of the crew on this boat, his name was Harold Cole Baker born and lived in Lowestoft , unfortunately he was taken ill at sea and died in Milford Haven in 1945. I am not sure if he was on the SS George Baker when he was taken ill but my Grandmother had to travel to Milford Haven by Train (A very long Journey then) from Lowestoft, but he passed away 20 minutes before she got to the hospital.

I have a photograph of the crew on the deck of the SS George Baker which I am guessing was taken between 1922 and 1939, it could be in Lowestoft but I am not sure.

I have seen the photograph of the King Erik also elswhere stating she is at Stromstad Sweden but I am very sure it is at Grimsby with the distinctive hydraulic tower in the background.
You can see the tower just astern of the King Erik in the bottom photograph.
My guess would be she has just fitted out at Grimsby after her sale to foreign owners.
